Public bandwidth, private networking and transfer allowances
A network-port speed describes capacity at a particular interface; it does not guarantee the same throughput to every user. Real performance also depends on the remote network, application, routing, protocol and storage. Public and private network specifications describe different paths.
Compare network terms carefully
- Check public port speed, committed or shared bandwidth, transfer allowance and any region-specific restrictions in the quote.
- Confirm the private network speed and which servers or virtual machines can communicate across it.
- List additional IP, routing, VPN or load-balancing requirements, including services that must remain private.
- For a performance problem, record the time, source and destination, direction of traffic and method used to measure throughput.
Avoid running large stress tests on production without an agreed window. A single speed-test result is not enough to identify a fault. Provide comparable measurements from more than one endpoint so support can separate server, application and path-related issues.
